Recycled racehorse Adirondack was a worthy poster boy for Saturday’s raceday, after dominating the VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) for trainer Shawn Mathrick.
The Cranbourne horseman was thrilled the former Godolphin galloper claimed the $280,000 race, having finished second in the Stony Creek Cup two starts back.
Now, Mathrick has guided Adirondack to four wins in eight starts for him – but none of those prior were anywhere near as lucrative as Saturday’s staying test in which the horse bolted in by five lengths.
“For us, we’re just a bush stable,” Mathrick said.
“To come and fight it out with the big boys and take one home [is great] … he’s a re-conditioned horse.
“He’s just been fantastic. The horse has that much heart, he just gives his all.”
Jarrod Todd had three rides at Moe on Saturday, but that didn’t stop him having a hand in a Caulfield winner.
“Racing’s a tough gig to survive in. We are a little stable and we own these horses ourselves,” said Mathrick, after revealing he had something on his galloper.
“Jarrod Todd – credit to him. He rode him in work on Tuesday, and he hopped off him, and said he won’t get beat.
“He’s a great judge, and we followed him in.”
Mathrick said the winnings, and prizemoney, will go back in towards developing his new farm.
As for Adirondack, he is bound for the Darwin Cup on August 1.
