Top performing mare Gig has won her third race at Flemington – this time with trainer Shawn Mathrick at her fourth run under his care.

Formerly under the Darley operation with Peter Snowden the Commands mare was a highly spruiked talent winning three races and placing in a further seven from a short yet successful career with global giant.

Put through the annual 2013 Darley Reduction Sale Mathrick paid $61,000 for the five-year-old – the second most expensive of the forty lots offered.

With Vlad Duric hopping aboard for the first time the 1400 metre journey suited well after solid lead-up runs in preparation and scored by a half length at $6. Settling midfield in the run Gig was able to overcome early pacemakers Five All (Darren Weir) and Balaclava Lady (Nigel Blackiston) to win comprehensively.

Post race Mathrick explained is battling a niggling laminitis issue which with the help of concussion plates and hoof pads has her racing in good spirit.

Purchased predominantly for breeding purposes Mathrick is hoping Gig can feature in some of the feature races throughout the Autumn and Spring Carnivals.

Saturday’s win took Gig’s career earnings over $300,000.
